Fit, Freedom, and Joy

Finding Fit, Freedom, and Joy in Sewing My Own Clothes

If you have ever stood in a fitting room light, staring at a pair of skinny jeans that refused to move past your thighs, let me give you a warm, understanding nod across the room. For as long as I can remember, finding clothes off the rack that fit properly has felt like solving a puzzle with missing pieces. Skinny jeans, in particular, were the absolute bane of my fashion existence!

For the longest time, I thought it was just me. But here is what I have learned through years of running my alteration studio and sewing for myself: my body shape is not a reflection of poor lifestyle choices or a lack of effort.

Back in 2023, I ran a 21k half-marathon! Even with all that running, my legs didn’t slim down. On many days, walking up a flight of stairs still feels less like simple movement and more like lifting a 10 kg bag of potatoes with every single step. I eat heart-healthy, gluten-free, heavily plant-based meals—and, of course, fuel my days with plenty of good coffee! Yet, the scale and the measurements stay right where they are.

That is because bodies are wonderfully unique. Up to 33% of women are naturally pear-shaped, and conditions like lipedema affect roughly 1 in 10 women worldwide. In many cultures, full, curvaceous shapes are celebrated for the beauty they hold. So why should we force our bodies into ill-fitting, standard-sized garments that don’t love us back?

That realization is exactly why I sew.

Why I Choose Dresses and Skirts

In my work meeting music students and welcoming clients into my alteration studio, I love wearing dresses and skirts. There is something so fluid and elegant about a well-draped skirt. It feels delightfully feminine, looks polished and professional, and instantly keeps me from feeling like a slob—even on the busiest studio days.

When you sew your own garments, you step away from the endless cycle of buying off-the-rack clothes only to perform the same repetitive alterations over and over again. Instead of tweaking a garment designed for someone else’s proportions, you start from scratch with patterns and fabrics that flatter your body as it is.

Crafting Garments with Purpose and Love

Convinced that I am not the only one navigating these wardrobe frustrations, I wanted to share my design ideas and sewing journey with you.

My design philosophy is simple:

  • Garments I actually want to wear: I focus on creating silhouettes that offer movement, comfort, and sophisticated style.
  • Construction that feels rewarding: I share sewing techniques that keep the process straightforward, enjoyable, and resourcefully creative.
  • Celebrating your shape: Clothing should frame your personality and lifestyle, never constrain it.

So grab your favourite cup of coffee, plop yourself into a comfortable chair, and let’s plan patterns (with less adjustments), fabric choices, and beautiful seams. Sewing our own clothes isn’t just a solution to fit woes—it’s a joyful, creative celebration of who we are.
